FREE GUN SAFETY LOCKS TO BE DISTRIBUTED IN ROWLETT AS PART OF STATEWIDE FIREARMS SAFETY PROGRAM
The Rowlett Police Department will distribute 8,000 gun safety locks to citizens in an effort to promote firearms safety.
Beginning Monday, Sept. 24, the free locks will be available to Rowlett residents ages 18 years and older at the Records Section window in the Rowlett Police Department lobby while supplies last.
Crime Prevention Officer Dan Miller said the gun lock distribution is part of Project ChildSafe, a statewide firearms safety education and gunlock program.
"With the proper use of these locks, if a child somehow obtains a gun, there's less of a chance for that child to get hurt," Miller said. "Also, if someone breaks into your home and wants to steal your gun, they will have to go to extra lengths to be able to use that weapon."
Use of the gun safety locks will require gun owners to store their weapons unloaded, Miller said, something that gun safety advocates encourage. Miller, who helped coordinate the city's participation in Project ChildSafe, said gun owners should keep their firearms in a safe and locked location and store ammunition separately from firearms.
Gun safety locks will be distributed at various Rowlett police functions, including Crime Watch meetings DO NOT bring any firearms to the police department or gun lock distribution locations.
The Office of the Governor initiated Project ChildSafe under former governor George Bush. It is being coordinated by the Office of the Governor and the Texas Criminal Justice Division and administered by the non-profit National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). The program aims to promote firearms safety messages and to provide free gun locking devices to all Texas gun owners.

NOTE: Gun locks are intended to deter unauthorized persons, especially young children, from accessing and firing a weapon. The City of Rowlett did not make the gun locks. The manufacturer is solely responsible for the quality, reliability, and the suitability of the gun locks for their intended purpose.
