  • About.com: Genealogy
    About.com includes a multitude of genealogy resources in its database, including a genealogy glossary and genealogy resource library. Topics are listed in the gray box running down the left side of the screen. Selecting a topic will bring up articles and/or links with short descriptions for web sites. Additional sponsored links appear at the bottom of each page.
  • American Family Immigration History Center (Ellis Island)
    The Ellis Island web site allows users to search an electronic archive of over 22 million immigrants who came through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924. Stories about immigration research and a timeline of immigration history are also available. Users can create personal files and online family scrap books as well as purchase ship pictures and manifests.
  • Ancestry.com
    This web site offers a subscription-based service. Users can access the online database, which includes the 1880 and the 1930 U.S. Census, as well as the Social Security Death Index and other resources. Ancestry.com also maintains the Ancestry World tree with over 250 million names submitted by users.
  • Cemetery Records Online
    The Cemetery Transcription Library web site contains 3,544,302 cemetery records from 7,433 cemeteries around the world. Users can either search for cemeteries or browse the records by region.
  • Cyndi's List (list of genealogy sites on the Internet)
    Cyndi’s List is an online index of genealogical resources. The 189,900 links are categorized and cross-referenced. Users can choose between topical, alphabetical, no-frills, and text-only indexes.
  • Family History Network (Everton Publishers)
    The Family History Network is a subscription based genealogical research tool. This site puts researchers in contact with professionals, provides research advice and tutorials, publishes Family History Magazine articles, and maintains the Missing Ancestor database.
  • Family Search (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints)
    Maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this web site provides information and tips on starting family history research, as well as a vast searchable database of genealogical records.
  • Heritage Quest
    At Heritage Quest find a catalog of genealogy publication that can be searched by product type or browsed by state/locality, as well as genealogy tools, such as the Census Locator and the Event Finder.
  • RootsWeb
    Supported by Ancestry.com, RootsWeb is a free genealogy online community. This site offers family history research guides and tools and offers a database of over 250 million ancestor names and a registry of over a million surnames submitted by online genealogists.
  • Surname Web
    SunameWeb.org links to several genealogy research web sites and allows users to access search results from these sites through one simple search engine.
  • World GenWeb Project
    The World GenWeb Project is a collection of web sites dedicated to online ancestor research. Each country/region has its own website run by volunteers. The information located on each website depends largely upon the volunteers and host country.

U.S. Government

  • Government Land Office
    This web site provides access to Federal land conveyance records for the Public Land States, as well as to more than two million Federal land title records for Eastern Public Land States, issued between 1820 and 1908. Users can also request certified copies of land patents.
  • National Archives and Records Administration
    The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) provides the general public access to historical American government documents. The NARA website contains over 124,000 digital images, which can be retrieved through the online Archival Research Catalog.

  • AfriGeneas (African-American)
    This site is devoted to African American genealogy research, particularly African Ancestry in the Americas. AfriGeneas also serves as a research community with message boards and chat rooms.
  • JewishGen (Jewish)
    The JewishGen web site provides users a place to not only find Jewish genealogical resources and tools, but also to share their experiences with others. The following are a few of the components of this: the JewishGen Discussion Group, the JewishGen Family Finder database with over 300,000 surnames and towns, and the Family Tree of the Jewish People with over two million names.
  • Native American Links (Native American)
    The Native American genealogy web site offers state-based resources, roll indexes (online and free look-up services), free databases, subject-based mailing lists and communities, together with annotated and quick links to additional genealogy web sites. A link to instructions for registering for a CDIB card is also included.

  • GenTech
    GenTech is a division of the National Genealogical Society that focuses on genealogy and technology. This web site provides news and information about projects and conferences presented and/or sponsored by this organization.
  • National Genealogical Society
    The National Genealogical Society web site contains general organization information, online course descriptions and registration, research services, and conference information. Categorized genealogy links, news, and an online bookstore are also available.

  • Daughters of the American Revolution
    Access the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) national web site to apply for membership, establish lineage/identify a patriot ancestor, or search for local chapters. Additional information about the DAR Museum and the DAR library is also available.
  • Sons of the American Revolution
    The Sons of the American Revolution web site provides general information about the organization and its activities, membership contact information, as well as genealogy links and research services.
  • Daughters of the Republic of Texas
    The DRT library in San Antonio maintains The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) web site. This site contains information about the library and its services, an illustrated chronology of Alamo history, and useful history and genealogy links.
