Consumer Buying Guides

  • Consumer Reports (from Amazon.com)
    Amazon.com offers Consumer Reports for a select group of electronics. For each category there is a page written by Consumer Reports outlining various factors to consider when shopping for these items, including leading brand names, technical considerations, price ranges, and more.
  • Consumer Reports (from Yahoo)
    Yahoo offers free access to selected Consumer Report guides for the following categories: automotives, baby and childcare, computers, electronics, home and garden, and kitchen. Included for each category are performance ratings, buying advice, and key features. Complete guides are available with a yearly subscription fee.
  • Consumer World
    A non-commercial guide, Consumer World provides online access to more than 2,000 consumer resources. Resources include among others, product reviews, price comparisons, deals and bargains, directories, agencies, and news. Links to resources are organized into broader categories for ease of use, but search option is also provided.
  • Consumer Review
    Consumer Review offers buying advice for outdoor sporting goods and consumer electronics. Users find the products they are interested in, read and write reviews, participate in discussions, compare prices, and shop online.

Price Comparisons

  • Best Book Buys
    Best Book Buys allows users to browse bookstores, bestsellers, hot deals, top books by topic, book clubs, and book buy back programs. Use the title, author, keyword, or ISBN search to find the lowest price among a dozen online retailers for new and used books.
  • BizRate
    BizRate.com provides store ratings from customers, price comparisons, quality comparisons, and special offers. Products are divided by categories, but can also be located by keyword searching. Search results provide, depending on availability, the product image and price and the store reviews and overall rating.
  • DealTime
    DealTime.com allows users to compare a variety of online products and merchants by price, description, customer review and rating. Products listed come from over 2,000 online merchants and range from computers to health and beauty items, from baby clothes to office supplies. Use the search box to search for products in all or individual categories or select a section tab to see all products available.
  • MySimon
    Use MySimon.com to browse most popular products lists, weekly shopping picks, shopping guides, and gift ideas. Designed as a one-stop shopping comparison resource, items available at this site can be searched by keyword in all categories and advanced searches are available within categories. Sorting options for results lists include, by merchant, by brand, by product and by price.
  • Online Bookstore Price Comparison
    Isbn.nu provides price comparison’s from nine online book stores for any in-print and select out-of print books, as well as information about which source is the fastest from order to delivery. Search by title words, author, subject, or ISBN.
  • PriceCompare
    PriceCompare.com offers a collection of links to consumer web sites. To find a product use the keyword search option or select from the list of popular searches. The opening page provides a link and short description for a variety of price comparison web sites.
  • PriceGrabber
    PriceGrabber.com allows users to compare products, prices, and reviews; browse the site’s most popular products and merchant ratings; find rebates; and sell their own products. This site offers a variety of options for navigating the products’ lists, including filters for manufacturer and price, sorting options for price, rating, and popularity, and a side-by-side comparison chart view.

  • Better Business Bureau
    Use the Better Business Bureau (BBB) web site to check out companies and charities, file a complaint, access local BBBs, and get tips.
  • Better Business Bureau of Dallas
    • Search for Company Reports
      Use this web site to search for information about companies and charities located in the Dallas area, or the following counties: Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, and Rockwall. From this site users can also fill out an online complaint form or search the list of members.
  • Consumer Product Safety Commission
    The web site of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission provides recall information, publications, press releases, injury statistics, federal information, and online reports. A special section is dedicated to teaching children about safety at home and outdoors.
  • Consumer.gov
    At Consumer.gov, FirstGov for Consumers, users find links to a broad range of federal information resources. Resources are broken down into categories and sub-categories for easy-use. In addition, spotlight information, scam alerts, and related agencies are also provided.
  • FDA Recalls and Product Alerts
    Provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, this site includes Class I, defined as a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death, recalls and safety alerts from the past 60 days. A link is available to access a complete list of recalls.
  • Federal Trade Commission Consumer Protection
    In the consumer information and protection section of the Federal Trade Commission web site, users will find tips and publications with advice on avoiding scams and rip-offs. Articles are broken down into subject categories and are typically available in both text and PDF formats. Select information is also available in Spanish.
  • Texas Attorney General Consumer Protection
    A useful guide to consumer protection in Texas, the Texas Attorney General web site provides access to consumer protection brochures, information about how to file a complaint, sources of assistance and an online complaint form, as well as, information about charities and non-profit organizations, links to consumer related web sites, and contact information.
  • Texas Lemon Law
    Provided by the Texas Department of Transportation, the Texas Lemon Law web site makes available information about the Lemon Law, informal and formal procedures for filing a complaint and hearings, and online forms. Some information is also available in Spanish.
