  • Hoaxbusters
    The Hoaxbusters web site provides information about e-mail hoaxes, tips on how to recognize a hoax, and what to do if you receive one, as well as an index of known hoaxes.
  • How Stuff Works
    The computer section of the How Stuff Works web site provides information for the following categories: hardware, Internet, peripherals, security, short stuff, and software. Users can browse the descriptions of how stuff works by selecting either a category or the computer library for a complete list.
  • Webopedia
    Webopedia is a free online dictionary of words, phrases, and abbreviations relating to computer and Internet technology. New definitions are added and existing definitions are updated on a daily basis.

Computer History

  • Computer History Museum
    Through the Computer History Museum web site, users can search an artifact database, browse a timeline of computer history, view online exhibits, request photos or custom research, and find general information about the museum and its events.
  • Obsolete Computer Museum
    The Obsolete Computer Museum includes pictures and descriptions of computers that are no longer in common use. Also included are links to additional pages of interest and discussion boards.

  • Bare Bones Web search tutorial
    Made available by the University of South Carolina Beaufort Library, the Bare Bones 101 web tutorial provides 17 succinct lessons for searching the Internet. Lesson 17 includes link to more advanced searching guides.
  • Internet safety for children
    Created by a children’s charity organization in the United Kingdom and a member of the Children’s Charities’ Coalition for Internet Safety, this site offers a guide for parents to the Internet, a downloadable set of “Net Smart Rules” for children, and links to web sites devoted to Internet safety and child friendly web pages and search engines.
  • ISP Buyer's Guide
    The ISP Buyer’s Guide allows users to search for an ISP or Broadband ISP. Search options include searches by location/area code, country code, U.S. nationwide, or Canada nationwide. This site also includes search for web hosts and web designers.
  • Learn the Net
    Learn the Net offers wide-ranging, easy to use Internet training in English, Spanish, and French languages. Users can make use of the how-to guides, read articles, enroll in interactive classes, and even play games.
  • SafeKids.com
    Access SafeKids.com to find a guide for parents, rules for online safety, and an online safety slideshow, as well as additional resources and articles. A link to SafeTeens.com is also provided.

  • CNet
    At CNet find reviews, tips, popular lists, and buying guides for desktop computers, notebooks computers, handhelds, cameras, camcorders, music, cell phones, home video products, printers/scanners, wireless products, and internet providers.
  • PC Magazine
    PCMag.com, the online component of PC Magazine, provides comparative reviews and testing results for computing and Internet products. To find product information select the Reviews tab, and choose one of the following search categories: reviews, comparisons, editor’s choice, first looks, personal technology, or product guides.
  • PC World Magazine
    PCWorld.com, the online component of PC World Magazine, contains reviews of computer products, product pricing information, news, a library of freeware and shareware, and interactive tools. To find product reviews or information, select a category from the product guides, browse by topic, or select the reviews tab and choose a category.

    The About.com Internet/Network Security web guide provides access to book reviews, product reviews, articles, tutorials, polls and quizzes, sponsored links, and more. Security information is included for the following categories: general, wireless, e-mail, Windows 9x, Windows NT/2000, Windows XP, Mac, Linux, and Unix.
  • SecurityFocus.com
    Access SecurityFocus.com to find news, articles, columnists, guest features, vulnerabilities, advisories, and events for computer security related topics. A library of archived articles and materials, organized by subject, is also available.

  • TuCows Downloads
    From the Software Library of the TuCows web site users can search over 30,000 software titles and reviews. Software can be found by searching for key words or by browsing categories and programs for individual operating systems.
  • TuDogs
    TuDogs is a directory of free software and online services. Each entry includes description and review. Use the drop down menus at the top of each page to locate free software for the following categories: Internet, web development, graphics, systems, lifestyles, games, and other.
  • ZDNet
    ZDNet offers access to more than 40,000 free and trial-based software programs for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Palm OS, Windows CE, and Pocket PC. These programs can be browsed by operating system and category, or search for keywords.

  • NYPL Online Style Guide
    Created by the New York Public Library as guidelines for library web projects, the NYPL Online Style Guide includes information, tips, and guidelines for creating web pages with XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets.
  • Usability Professionals' Association
    The Usability Professionals’ Association provides standards, resources, projects, publications, and style guides to assist users in creating accessible web sites.
  • Web Developer's Virtual Library
    The Web Developer’s Virtual Library includes articles and information about web authoring, design, graphics, software and the Internet. Additional resources and tutorials are also available listed under the heading WDVL Resources.
  • WebReference.com
    Use WebReference.com to find a variety of resources for web masters, including information and tips from experts organized by topic, coding tools, online services, web host search, discussion forums, and reference materials.
  • World Wide Web Consortium
    The Word Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops and promotes standard technologies for the Web. The W3C web site provides information about HTML, XML, Cascading Style Sheets and Scalable Vector Graphics, as well as information and news about the W3C and W3C technologies.
